Well done Balrothery Ladies on retaining the Fingal Tennis League Trophy against Sutton Ladies yesterday at Skerries Tennis Courts. It was an epic final on a beautiful sunny afternoon at the Costa Del Skerries. At first Sutton won their opening two singles games, but then the Balrothery Ladies dug deep and fought back to win the remaining single and two doubles games which all went to three sets and a tie-break in the final set. Well done to the Balrothery Ladies tennis team of Sinead Cody, Sally Donnelly, Anne Barrett who played singles and Rosie Duffy/Lisa McGrane and Noelle Rooney/Lynn Stenson who played doubles.

posted by godfrey on Thursday, May 16th, 2013
At our AGM yesterday evening we wish to thank both Rosie Duffy and Nuala O’Donnell who stepped down as Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer respectively for all the good accounts management they did for the Club over the last two years. In their place has stepped up two ladies Anne Barrett and Lisa McGrane and we would like to welcome them to the committee. Barry Dean has also stepped down and we would also like to thank him for all his contribution to the Club. Paul Andrews has assumed the full mens captaincy with the assistance of David Meskell. We are currently looking for two persons within the Club who would be interested in being junior co-ordinators. The Club will send the junior co-ordinators on appropriate courses re:child protection and safety and appropriate child tennis training courses for this purpose. The rest of the committee have agreed to stay on for another year.

Back in 2000 our girls & boys junior teams won the Parks Tennis League

Back in 2000 our girls & boys junior teams won the Parks Tennis League

posted by polanders on Saturday, April 6th, 2013
Article in Fingal Independent 15 September 2000

The boys and girls of Balrothery swept the boards in the Kit Kat Parks Tennis League this summer, with both teams winning their Division 1 leagues outright. The girls team have won the event on several occasions in the past but this was a first for the boys and the double made for some very special celebrations.

‘Dedication, hard work and pracitice have paid off handsomely again.’ is how team coach Evelyn Hanrahan put it after the great wins as she paid tribute to all those who made the great wins possible.

The girls team beat Balbriggan, Baltray and Skerries in their section to make it to the semi-finals where they really upped a gear to outclass a talented Albrt College side. In the finals in St Annes Park, Raheny, they were faced by a gritty North Kildare outfit but edged them out well on a comfortable 6-3 margin.

The hot-shot Balrothery girls who took the title in such style were: Lorna Sweetman, Maebh Moloney, Audrey McDonnell, Susan Miller, Ashling Cox, Susan Rock, Bronagh McCoy, Caroline Miller, Anna Sweetman, and team captain Kate Lynch.

The boys team pushed their way past Donaghmede, Baltray and Skerries in their opening rounds before they dispatched Poppintree in the semis. Ballyfermot were their victims in the final, with the Balrothery squad charging home on an impressive 8-1 scoreline.

The squad were: Conor Shiel, Harry Kennedy, Tomas Shiel, Conor Moloney, Karl Dickson, Gordon Sambrooks, Ian Bertram, Kevin Heffernan, Garreth Allen, and team captain Alan Kelly.

The brains behind the operation were the top class coaches Evelyn Hanrahan and Heather Kennedy.

Tie Break Rules - how to proceed after 6-6

Tie Break Rules - how to proceed after 6-6

posted by polanders on Friday, July 20th, 2012
As a tie break doesn’t happen too often and sometimes players can end up scratching their heads trying to remember how to proceed, here’s how...

The player who would normally be serving after 6-6 is the one to serve first in the tie break, and the tie break is considered a service game for this player.
The server begins his service from the deuce court and serves one point. After the first point, the serve changes to the first server’s opponent. Each player then serves two consecutive points for the remainder of the tiebreak. The first of each two-point sequence starts from the server’s advantage court and the second starts from the deuce court. In this way, the sum of the scores is even when the server serves from the deuce court. After every six points, the players switch ends of the court; it can occur in the middle of a server’s two-point sequence.

The tie break winner is the first person to reach 7 points or above with a 2 point lead on their opponent.
